The Rise of the Instagram Empire

Alexa Stress

Famous for its square image format and numerous photo filters, Instagram has captured the market for photo, and now, video sharing. Registered users can take a photo, customize it with filters and editing options to give it an artsy and professional-looking image, then upload it publicly or privately to their followers. The hashtag trend is widely used within captions and comments.

Voted iPhone App of the Year

December 2011

 Kevin Systrom & Mike Krieger

How it all began

Instagram was founded in 2010 in San Francisco, as a side project by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Systrom posted the first photo to Instagram on July 16, 2010. In October that year, the Instagram iOS app was officially released through the App Store. The name is a combination of “instant camera” and “telegram.” Two years later it was released for Android and there more than one million downloads in one day. In April 2012, Facebook bought the company for $1 billion. Instagram has skyrocketed. The right time, the right place, the right market. It has all been organic growth. 8 years from its beginning, Instagram still proves to be a powerful force to be reckoned with.
